Mindfulness at work: small pauses in a busy day

You don't need a quiet room or half an hour. Three-minute pauses that fit between meetings, emails and deadlines.

Busy days can leave you running from one thing to the next without noticing how tense or tired you've become. A few short pauses can help you reset, without taking time you don't have.

Five pauses that fit a working day

  • Before you open your inbox: three slow breaths, with a longer out-breath.
  • Between meetings: a 3-minute breathing space. Notice what's here, gather your attention on your breath, then widen it again.
  • While the kettle boils: feel your feet on the floor and notice the sounds around you.
  • After a difficult conversation: pause before replying to anything. Name the feeling to yourself.
  • On the way home: walk part of the way with your attention on your steps, not your phone.

You don't need to do all of these. Pick one, and link it to something you already do every day.

If work stress is constant or getting worse, it may help to talk to your manager, an employee assistance programme if you have one, or your GP.
